SEM Micro-Moth Wockia chewbacca

Selected entry to the scientific photography competition Image Lab that was exhibited at the Belém Cultural Center. A scanning electron microscope image of Wockia chewbacca(illustrated and published before) was colorized and enhanced. The label in the exhibit read “Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce you to a new insect: Wockia chewbacca. This is the catterpillar of a Mexican micro-moth named after the Star Wars character. The unusual body projections and hairs had never been seen before and the studies conducted at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History found no explanation for their existence. In the head, less than 3mm wide, we find (from top to bottom) 12 eyes (in red), the antennae and the spinneret that produces the silk in the cocoon”.
