It was a pleasure to accept the invitation from the organizers of ComSciCon-Houston 2019 to participate in the panel ‘Science Communication for Diverse Audiences: Beyond Science Writing’. This was the third edition of the science communication conference franchise at Rice University and a great bunch of enthusiastic and dedicated graduate students participated. After giving an overview of what visual science communication is about and speaking of its relevance, I had the pleasure of reviewing some of the participants’ written assignments and sitting through a wonderful day of workshops and panels.

Book Augmented Reality in Museum Exhibits

The book Augmented Reality in Museum Exhibits: User Experiences is the 13th volume in the museum studies collection published by Caleidoscópio in collaboration with the Portuguese Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage. I was truly honored that my Ph.D. dissertation joined this collection, side by side remarkable thesis and authors, and thankful to the editors for the support and revisions. My work is thus officially published in English (thesis format) and in Portuguese (book format) and hopefully makes a valuable contribution to the understanding of museum visitor experiences with technology.

The book is now for sale at the stores of Portuguese museums and palaces, and in selected bookstores. A formal book release ceremony will be held in June of 2019.

The Rómulo science center at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) was the host of an informal presentation about visual science communication. I very much appreciate the invitation and warm welcome of António Piedade, well-known science communicator, and leader of a project that every week takes beautiful and approachable science writing to local newspapers. A summary video of the presentation is coming soon.

It was a great honor to participate in the colloquium ‘Visualizing Science: The Art of Communicating Science’ organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)! In conjunction with the exhibit “Visualize: Art Revealing Science” that was on display at the AAAS gallery, it was a well-attended event that gave all the panelists an opportunity to talk about their careers and about visual science communication at large. It was streamed on Facebook live and the video can be accessed here.

A wonderful and unexpected recognition from the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators – a Special Project Award! This award pertains to the work I have done on developing the social media presence of GNSI, both year-round and during the annual conference. The purpose of this work has been to 1) reinforce the sense of community within conference participants, 2) give non-participants an opportunity to follow remotely, and 3) produce assets such as video, photographs and written content that perpetuate and disseminate the value of the events.

I have helped recruit and onboard conference social media mavens, and defined and improved the role of the GNSI Social Media Coordinator, the person who throughout the year ensures that science illustration news are carried on Facebook and Twitter to the many GNSI followers. Together we have harnessed the technology, and informed, educated and amused hundreds of followers.

I was recently featured in the beautiful video Diana Marques: visual science communicator. Produced by Neil Orman at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), it is one of two videos that promote the exhibit Visualize: Art Revealing Science currently open at the AAAS gallery. I was also interviewed by Juwon Song who summed up in a nice article what the exhibit and profession are about. This exhibit celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators and the work of its members; as a proud member of 18 years and exhibit participant with four entries selected by the jury, I was honored to be interviewed to represent the profession of a visual science communicator. The feedback about the video has been wonderful and I hope you like it too!

The GNSI Annual Member Exhibit is special this year. Under the theme “Visualize: Art Revealing Science” the exhibit will take place at the American Association for the Advancement of Science Art Gallery in downtown Washington, D.C., July 16-October 15. Not only it is a noteworthy location with plenty exposure, it is also a generous duration. And I could not be happier that all my three submissions were accepted!

A variety of media and visual styles will represent my work:

Ants and Their Garden – an information graphic with a snapshot of the complex social system of leafcutter ants and their process of cultivating plant matter to maintain fungus garden that feeds the entire colony.

Electric Eel Anatomy – an animation video created for the Electric Fishes Demonstration Lab at the Amazonia House of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo illustrating the unique body of electric eels.

Sculpted Tree Ant – an interactive 3D model of an ant species commonly found in the Old World tropics, living in the canopy of trees.

Follow the links under each title to get to the Portfolio and learn more about these pieces!
