The Illustrators Club promotes the business of art and illustration in the Greater DC area and hosts biannual exhibitions of local artists work. My piece “Mackerels” was selected by a distinguished jury to be part of the exhibition at the Edison Place Art Gallery in Washington DC, and was featured in the exhibit catalogue.

Exhibition ‘X Focus on Nature’

Focus on Nature is a renowned biannual exhibition of scientific, natural and cultural history with very high quality standards and intense international participation, organized and hosted by the New York State Museum in Albany. My piece “Sardines” was selected by a distinguished jury to be part of the exhibition and is included in the exhibit’s catalogue.

Workshop: Introduction to Science Illustration

The four day workshop at the Lusófona University in Lisbon covered the basic principles of science illustration using graphite and ink. Participants from all over the country attended the workshop.

XII National Meeting of Biology Students in Braga

The organizing committee of the Meeting invited me to teach an introductory workshop covering the basic principles of science illustration, using graphite as an illustration media. A digital exhibition of my portfolio was on display for the duration of the Meeting.

Exhibition ‘Butterflies and Plants: partners in evolution’

The permanent exhibition “Butterflies and Plants: partners in evolution” opened at the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum. Acclaimed by the public, it features a live butterfly house and accompanying panels inform on the coevolution of butterflies and plants, featuring several examples from nature. I was commissioned to produce illustrations of a monarch butterfly that were later mounted on three-dimensional 5 feet wide wire structures to display at the entrance to the exhibition hall. I also created the illustrations of moths and butterflies in the animations that played on the exhibition’s website.

The GNSI-Greater Washington DC Chapter holds monthly meetings and promotes science illustration related events (lectures, fieldtrips) for local artists. As the program coordinator I was in charge of planning the events and support their logistics.

Jury of the Society for Technical Communication

The Society for Technical Communication is an international organization dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences. Local chapters hold local competitions, which select the pieces that advance to the international competitions. In 2007 I was invited to participate in the DC Chapter jury for the Technical Art category.

MexicoFest at the National Museum of Natural History

MexicoFest was a festival promoted by the Latino Program of the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum to popularize the culture, traditions and natural richnesses of Mexico. I was there demonstrating traditional techniques of science illustration using Mexican marine mammals species and designed a poster about the mammals of North and Central America.

Guild of Natural Science Illustrators Annual Conference in Bozeman

I was part of the Technique Showcase at the GNSI Annual Conference demoing the software Fontographer specialized in creating computer typefaces. The digital illustration piece “Sardines” was selected by the jury to be on display at the Members Exhibit and won the Members Choice Award! The member exhibitions at the annual GNSI meetings are marked by high quality standards and it was a true honor to be distinguished with this award.
