Guild of Natural Science Illustrators Annual Conference in Bar Harbor

At the GNSI annual conference I did a presentation on a long time favorite subject of mine: the combination of words/text and calligraphy/computer typefaces with science illustrations. The presentation is entitled “The 26 Letters in Science Illustration” and the slideshow is available here. I spoke of the history of the alphabet and the evolution of combining words and images; the presentation also analyzes current science illustrations that include text or identification names.

Internship at the American Museum of Natural History

At one of the largest natural history museums of the world I was fortunate to work on illustrations and photography of fossil turtles for a research project at the Paleontology Division, using traditional and digital media.

Worked at the Entomology and Crustacean Sections, illustrating cicadas and crabs using traditional media like scratchboard and carbon dust. This crab illustration represents the first species discovered of an entire new crustacean family!

Completed! The Certificate Program of Scientific Illustration at the University of California in Santa Cruz is the most prestigious science illustration program in the United States and selects just a few students every year, preparing them for the challenges of the career and capacitating them with the fundamental skills and techniques to excel in the profession.

The annual exhibition ‘Illustrating Nature’ is organized and prepared by the professors and students of the Certificate Program of Scientific Illustration at the University of California in Santa Cruz and it showcases the students’ work during the Program. At the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, several of my pieces were on display including “trompe l’oeil“.
