A wonderful and unexpected recognition from the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators – a Special Project Award! This award pertains to the work I have done on developing the social media presence of GNSI, both year-round and during the annual conference. The purpose of this work has been to 1) reinforce the sense of community within conference participants, 2) give non-participants an opportunity to follow remotely, and 3) produce assets such as video, photographs and written content that perpetuate and disseminate the value of the events.
I have helped recruit and onboard conference social media mavens, and defined and improved the role of the GNSI Social Media Coordinator, the person who throughout the year ensures that science illustration news are carried on Facebook and Twitter to the many GNSI followers. Together we have harnessed the technology, and informed, educated and amused hundreds of followers.

Women in Science is a photography exhibit at the Pavilion of Knowledge in Lisbon, portraying and honoring over one hundred Portuguese scientists. It is truly an honor to be included in such a recognized group of accomplished women! Beautiful website by the online newspaper Observador on the same topic too. At the International Women’s Day the accompanying catalog to the exhibit was presented along with the exhibit digital kiosk.

The week before traveling to a conference where I’ll be giving a presentation is always a rush! Heading to Minneapolis in 8 days and couldn’t be more excited about the program and meeting the other attendees and presenters. And best of all, I was honored to be given one of the few scholarships that the MCN Scholarship Committee hands out every year! It is extremely generous support and facilitates the interaction with many other museum professionals. Looking forward to this trip.

Congratulations to us!

I was truly honored to be invited by the United Nations Postal Administration to design the 2012 edition of their ongoing Endangered Species Stamp series. This commemorative edition celebrating the 20th anniversary of the collection became available for sale in April and gathered a lot of attention, including an award for one of the illustrations! The ‘Elephant Eared Chameleon’ illustration was distinguished with the Judges’ Special Award at the ScienceOnline 2012 Art Show.
The press coverage was extensive. The online newspaper P3 published an article, and so did the newspapers Boas Notícias and No Feminino-Negócios. The TV channels SIC and SIC Notícias broadcasted an interview recorded at the Lisbon Zoo about the invitation to the project and its development. The printed and online weekly magazine Visão also interviewed me in the context of an article about Scientific Illustration.

The Gulbenkian Science Institute commissioned me to direct and animate a video to be used as an online educational material in schools. Me and My Body is an appealing and accurate way to learn about organs, cells and the different methods scientists use to study them. The Portuguese version of the video (above is the english subtitled version) has had over 50,000 views on YouTube and received a lot of praise. The animation was distinguished with the First Prize for Educational Materials Category of the Ciencia en Acción Awards AND the Judges Special Award from the House of Science! These are two prestigious awards: the first attributed to the best educational materials produced in Spanish or Portuguese speaking countries; and the second given to educational materials for their originality, quality and teaching value by House of Science, a databank with lesson plans for teachers.

This award has been given annually for 30 years to museums who make a significant contribution to the understanding of European cultural heritage. The Portimão Museum, which displays some of my illustrations in the permanent exhibit, is the second Portuguese institution to be distinguished.
