Who would know that every year there is a conference dedicated exclusively to bring together comic artists and public health professionals? It’s the result of the wonderful work done by Graphic Medicine that promotes the creation of materials for patients and physicians to communicate better. I attended the conference given my interest in the use of comics for communication in science and was greatly impressed by the initiative and presentations.

EVA London 2013 Conference

London hosts annually the Electronic Visualisation and the Arts Conference. In the 2013 edition I presented my doctoral research on the museum visitors’s experience with augmented reality technology. The paper for my presentation was published in the conference proceedings and it can be read online or at the Publications page.

Careers in Science: diversity against adversity

I gladly accepted to participate in the conference ‘Careers in Science: diversity against adversity’ organized by three associations (PAPS, PARSUK and FIIP) dedicated to support and develop the presence of Portuguese students and researchers abroad. I was part of a roundtable discussing the professional challenges and benefits of studying and working in the United States. Check out the video (in Portuguese) at 9:08.

The First International Conference of Illustration and Animation took place in the beautiful costal town of Ofir. It was the first international gathering about illustration and animation in Portugal that I attended to be up to date with colleagues’ projects and developments, and to network.

Association Europénne des Illustrateurs Médicaux et Scientifiques Conference in Strasbourg

It was a pleasure to once again meet other European scientific and medical illustrators at the AEIMS annual conference held in Strasbourg and to present an upcoming book project. I also participated in the exhibition “Anatomy of an Image”, which displayed panels with illustrations and accompanying texts to detail the process of commission and creation of the images.

4th National Meeting of Illustration

I was honored to be invited to participate in one of the most prestigious events for Portuguese illustrators, the national meeting that annually takes place in São João da Madeira. I created three pieces specially for the exhibition themed ‘Hats’ and I also participated in the roundtable discussing the profession of an illustrator abroad.

Conference Drawing–Knowing How to Draw at the Fine Arts College of the University of Lisbon

A full day of presentations that reflected over the differences between drawing and knowing how to draw, in the appropriate setting of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Lisbon. My presentation was later turned into the article ‘Drawing Science, Knowing What You Are Drawing’ that you can download from the Publications page.

International Conference ‘Crossings’ at the Gulbenkian Foundation

The Center for Image in Science and Art of the University of Lisbon presented the work and results of its research project at Crossings, a three day event at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. The conference closed with a seminar entirely dedicated to Scientific Illustration where I did a presentation about the basic principles of scientific illustration.
