I was delighted to be invited once again to participate in the Brazilian Science illustration meeting to teach two workshops on digital media applied to scientific illustration. Two of my illustrations were also on view at the conference exhibition.

“Visualizing the World of Science” was the theme for the AEIMS conference in Milan, an enriching experience that covered the most recent developments in scientific visualization. My presentation was entitled “Collaborating with the Smithsonian” and reflected on the different roles science illustrators perform today as freelancers and full time staff in museums and other institutions.

I participated in the conference with a presentation about work commissioned for the Ocean Hall of the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum, particularly on the production of the illustrations for an animation on the evolution of whales.

The organizing committee of the II Brazilian Science Illustration Meeting invited me to be part of the roundtable “Science Illustration and Nature Preservation” and to also teach a workshop on using digital media to produce science illustrations. I also presented about the history, events and members of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators as being one of the major professional associations of science illustration.

I was part of the Technique Showcase at the GNSI Annual Conference demoing the software Fontographer specialized in creating computer typefaces. The digital illustration piece “Sardines” was selected by the jury to be on display at the Members Exhibit and won the Members Choice Award! The member exhibitions at the annual GNSI meetings are marked by high quality standards and it was a true honor to be distinguished with this award.

At the GNSI annual conference I presented about the illustrated book project I’ve been working on. The book will be about the 19th century French entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre and during the presentation I unveiled the first illustration and discussed the computer typeface Fabre I created purposely to integrate in the illustrations. My acrylic piece “A pond’s life” was selected by the jury to be on display at the Members Exhibit at the Ebling Library of the University of Wisconsin.

Conference Communicating Science in Portugal

The first event of its kind in Portugal, held at the Science Gulbenkian Institute, counted with the presence of well-known national and international science communication professionals. I was part of the selected group of panelists with the presentation “Communicating Science Through Images.”

At the GNSI annual conference I did a presentation on a long time favorite subject of mine: the combination of words/text and calligraphy/computer typefaces with science illustrations. The presentation is entitled “The 26 Letters in Science Illustration” and the slideshow is available here. I spoke of the history of the alphabet and the evolution of combining words and images; the presentation also analyzes current science illustrations that include text or identification names.
