The Museum of Portimão is located in the south of Portugal and repurposed the facilities of an old fish canning factory to educate and popularize how this important industry works from catching the fish all the way to present it in a can. The museum commissioned me to create several illustrations that show the anatomy of fish used in canning and applied them in extra large panels right at the entrance of the permanent exhibit. The same images are used outside of the museum for promotion.

The permanent exhibition “Butterflies and Plants: partners in evolution” opened at the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum. Acclaimed by the public, it features a live butterfly house and accompanying panels inform on the coevolution of butterflies and plants, featuring several examples from nature. I was commissioned to produce illustrations of a monarch butterfly that were later mounted on three-dimensional 5 feet wide wire structures to display at the entrance to the exhibition hall. I also created the illustrations of moths and butterflies in the animations that played on the exhibition’s website.

I was there demonstrating how to use microscopes to create fossil illustrations and designed a poster about paleontological illustration. I also created the face-in-hole 6ft panels with three interchanging trilobites for children’s fun!
