The Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC is one of the most well-known celebrations of spring and takes place during peak bloom of hundreds of cherry trees donated by Japan to the American capital city. The white and pink dominate the landscape and charm thousands of tourists and residents. Setting out to be inspired by the canopies, I was instead completely drawn to the trunks with small clusters of flowers erupting from where a branch once was. Combining the black and white of the scratchboard technique with the color of pressed fresh flowers seemed to be just the right touch to capture the one-week annual beauty.
